In replacing missing teeth, dental bridges provide both long-term function and beauty.
Missing teeth can be restored in a number of different ways, including bridges. In addition, they maintain the position of healthy teeth, while improving your smile.
To close a gap, a bridge consists of two crowns that are joined by a false tooth. Bridge abutments are attached to either side of the gap by healthy teeth.
Bridges are made in a laboratory after impressions of the two prepared teeth on either side of the gap are taken. As part of my digital workflow, I aim to use the iTero 3D scanner to avoid messy impressions.
As part of your comprehensive consultation we will discuss:
The options available to you to close the gap
Identifying the risks (if any) of each option
The total cost of all options
Maintaining your smile
In the event of tooth loss, bridges can prevent a cycle of problems, such as shifting and drifting of remaining teeth. As opposed to dentures, replacement teeth are permanently attached to healthy teeth using crowns or dental implants, which are superior because they offer superior support and stability.
Porcelain teeth are attached to a metal core to provide strength and to ensure the prosthesis looks as natural as possible. Designed to function similarly to natural teeth, the materials I use are durable and robust.
Most often, a bridge can be used to replace a missing tooth. Prior to undergoing a bridge, it is recommended that any bone and gum shrinkage be stopped for a period of up to 6 months after the extraction. As a temporary cosmetic remedy, you will be offered a denture. During your initial consultation, we will check that your neighbouring teeth and gums are in good health, as non-vital teeth or gum disease do not make a good foundation for a dental bridge.
Caring for Your Dental Bridge
Keeping your mouth healthy will prolong the lifespan of your bridge and its surrounding tissues. You should be especially vigilant when brushing and flossing around your dental bridge and the surrounding gum tissue.
To maintain gum health and prevent decay around the margins of your bridge, you should use Superfloss and interdental brushes. A dentist or hygienist will show you how to clean your teeth with interdental brushes and dental floss.
