Inlays and onlays provide a long-term strengthening solution for damaged teeth requiring large fillings. Inlays are similar to a filling, in that they fill a large cavity between the cusps of your natural tooth.
Using an onlay, the entire chewing surface of a tooth can be restored after one or more of the corners is damaged or worn away. They are similar to dental crowns, but require less preparation of the natural tooth and function as a 3/4 crown.

An inlay or onlay is made by a technician in a dental lab. The tooth is then bonded to the inlay or onlay by your dentist. This is referred to as an indirect restoration. Traditionally, fillings are applied directly to the affected tooth after being prepared, referred to as “direct” restorations.
